How to read 0 * * * *
0 in the minute field pins the job to minute 0. * in the hour field means every hour, and the last three * fields mean every day.
| Field | Value | Meaning | Allowed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minute | 0 | At the top of the hour | 0-59 |
| Hour | * | Every hour | 0-23 |
| Day of month | * | Every day of the month | 1-31 |
| Month | * | Every month | 1-12 or jan-dec |
| Weekday | * | Every day of week | 0-7 or sun-sat |
Watch out for
* * * * *is a common mistake for hourly: it runs every minute. The minute field needs a fixed number.- Many jobs start at :00. If yours does not need to, pick another minute, such as
17 * * * *, to stay out of the spike. @hourlyis a shortcut for0 * * * *in most cron versions.
Often used for: Hourly reports, rollups, imports and maintenance.
Use it in
crontab
0 * * * * /path/to/your-script.shEdit with crontab -e. Runs in the server's timezone.
